Imagine waking up around four in the morning to frantic banging on the front door. You would think ones first reaction would be to call 911; however, that is not what this man did.

Fifty-five-year-old, Theodore Wafer was charged with second-degree murder and was sentenced from 15-30 years in prison.

Nineteen-year-old, Renisha McBride showed up at Wafer’s door early one morning. After being in a car accident and looking for some help. Wafer claimed that the banging on the door was so frantic, it made him fear his own life. However, instead of calling for help, he got his gun, opened the door, and shot McBride in the face.

After the incident, people started labeling this case as a hate-crime because the victim, McBride, was African American, and Wafer was white. Facts show that this was not a hate-crime. McBride was not targeted by the color of her skin. Reports also indicate that McBride (19- a minor,) was drunk at the time of the car accident. She had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit and medical reports indicate marijuana was found in her system as well. Reports also show that McBride had crushed her car into a parked car around 1 a.m. and was found three hours later, dead.

I do not favor one person over the other. Both parties were in the wrong; however, comparing both criminal activities would be like comparing apples and oranges. Wafer was not within his rights (self-defense) to shoot her. She did not break an entry. What do you think?
